Athletes, coach selected as Touchdown Club award finalists

 Jersey Village High School senior defensive back Christian Taylor is among 10 finalists for the Touchdown Club of Houston Defensive Player of the Year award.

Dec. 3, 2014—Four CFISD football players and one head coach have been selected as award finalists and will be recognized at the 35th Annual UIL High School Awards Dinner, presented by Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at the JW Marriott’s Liberty Hall (5150 Westheimer Road).

Cypress Woods High School senior quarterback Nick Hooper is one of 10 greater Houston finalists for the Offensive Player of the Year award. Hooper completed 150 of 246 passes for 2,553 yards and 19 touchdowns, rushed for 964 yards and 20 touchdowns and caught 2 passes for 2 touchdowns for the Wildcats this year.

The following three athletes are among 10 finalists for the Defensive Player of the Year award:

  • Cy-Fair High School senior defensive lineman Ross Donelly;
  • Cypress Falls High School senior defensive lineman Du’Vonta Lampkin; and
  • Jersey Village High School senior defensive back Christian Taylor.

Donelly posted 70 tackles, including 10 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery and 1 blocked field goal for the Bobcats this season.

Lampkin registered 80 tackles (49 solo) for the Golden Eagles this season, including a school-record 16 sacks and school-record 35 tackles for loss, as well as 6 forced fumbles.

Taylor recorded 94 tackles (56 solo) with 5 tackles for loss, 1 interception, 1 sack and 1 total touchdown on defense; with 9 receptions for 129 yards and 3 touchdowns on offense for the Falcons this season.

Cypress Ranch High School head coach Gene Johnson is among 10 finalists for the Coach of the Year award. Johnson has led the Mustangs to an 11-2 record, with an 8-1 second-place record in District 17-6A. Cypress Ranch enters the Region III-6A final against Dickinson on Saturday.

Video highlights of each of the finalists will be shown at the dinner, and one winner will be named in each category.
