Nov. 9, 2014—The Cy-Fair and Cypress Woods high school girls’ cross country teams placed among the top 15 teams at the UIL Class 6A Cross Country State Championships, held Nov. 8 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
Cy-Fair placed 10th overall with a score of 235, while Cypress Woods came in 14th with a score of 294.
Cy-Fair was led by sophomore Tyra Luong (29th overall, 19:01.01), senior Allison Hill (68th, 19:48.57), senior Kassandra Luna (81st, 19:59.24), sophomore Kaitlynn Schwab (86th, 20:01.62) and junior Rebecca Bonta (89th, 20:06.13).
Juniors Jessica Ullrich (116th, 20:35.98) and Jessica Tan (133rd, 21:00.29) rounded out the Bobcats’ finishers.
“I’m very happy that the girls ended the season as a top-10 team at state,” said Tom Kennedy, Cy-Fair head coach. “They went from second in district and seventh in region last year to district champs, regional runner-up and top 10 at state this year. The girls improved dramatically over one year by putting in a lot of mileage and working on their mental approach to their races while staying positive when facing adversity or setbacks. It was a great transformation to witness. The rate of improvement throughout the season has been remarkable and these girls have shown that hard work does pay off.”
Leading Cypress Woods’ effort was senior Madison Gilcrease (23rd, 18:59.95), sophomore Kelsey Evans (33rd, 19:12.60), senior Lorena Malendez (106th, 20:24.17), junior Gabby Howes (117th, 20:38.33) and junior Kara Sanstrom (136th, 21:03.69).
Freshman Lina Spjut (143rd, 22:03.85) and sophomore Kelly Koenig (145th, 22:10.72) also finished for the Wildcats.
“I’m really proud of what we accomplished this year, and to wrap up the season at the state meet was just an amazing experience for the program,” said Cypress Woods head coach Greg Zarate. “Several of these runners are wrapping up their high school cross country careers and I am just so happy to have seen them all grow over the years.”
Competing individually, Cypress Falls High School sophomore Jean Jenkins placed 50th with a time of 18:43.2.
In the boys’ race, Cypress Woods senior Zach Quinlan placed 44th with a time of 16:26.43 while senior teammate Shea Foster placed 52nd with a time of 16:33.59.
“It was very special for our program seeing Zach Quinlan compete in his fourth straight cross country meet – the first runner to do that in our program history,” Zarate said. “I am very happy for him and for all of our runners.”
Cypress Ridge High School senior Alex Dantzler placed 101st with a time of 17:13.31.
